We took the 2016 Lexus RX F Sport outside of the big city into the rural backwoods to find out how it holds up on a family road trip through the Texas Hill Country.
After loading the vehicle up to the max, I headed out for our adventure along winding Texas highways with two chatty teens in tow.
The Lexus RX F Sport is a great choice for a summer getaway. It’s a mid-sized, crossover utility vehicle available with front-wheel or all-wheel-drive and sold in standard and F-Sport trims with either “premium” or “luxury” treatments. The difference is in the quality, amount and size of the spiffs.
Its sporty look, with race-inspired details, red leather interior and razor sharp style, got me revved up about the opportunity to take it on the road. I was excited to experience the drive and to see how the RX F Sport would face a road trip challenge with teens.
Right off the bat, I realized driving enthusiasts will be excited to learn that the 2016 RX F Sport models all have better handling thanks to Adaptive Variable Suspension that efficiently controls each shock absorber individually.
Since I’ve reviewed other models on our many road trip adventures, I’ve come to expect luxurious comfort when driving the Lexus line of vehicles – and the RX F Sport did not fail to deliver. Both the interior and exterior have a trendy upgrade with exclusive color options, and the awesome alloy wheels really round out the sleek look.
From the ambient lighting to the handcrafted trim, the RX F Sport offers captivating comfort and it’s completely redesigned from the inside out.
The vehicle has been lowered and now offers a seating position that is more in sync with that of the Lexus LS. With the 2016 RX F Sport, you also get more cargo space in the rear which was an added plus for all of our luggage and gear.
We could easily load our suitcases and groceries in a snap thanks to the vehicle’s responsive touch-free power open/close rear door. Simply raise your hand to command the back door to open or press the button on the key fob. Load-ins are no hassle. It’s like having a personal valet at your service.
As we meandered down the road, I realized this five-passenger sport utility vehicle is a mom’s dream.
As moms, we often set aside our own wishes in a vehicle to make room for the kids. In the Lexus RX F Sport, there are features sure to please every member of your family.
Let’s start with the driver’s seat. It has multiple buttons you can program on the door to adjust the seat automatically for the individual driver. In the center console you will find USB, AUX and charging ports as well as some hidden storage at the bottom.
Another feature moms will appreciate is the under console storage. This nook, found under the center armrest between the driver and passenger, is the perfect place to stash a purse, snacks, mobile devices or even a road atlas (for those old school travelers).
No more throwing your belongings on the passenger seat and having it fly to the floorboard when you brake at a red light, take a sharp turn onto the rest stop exit, or cautiously brace behind an 18-wheeler while tooling down the road.
Other cool features were the innovative performance and operation technologies like our RX’s gorgeous 12.3 inch-wide-screen multimedia dashboard display.
The Heads-Up Display served as the command center for the navigation system, satellite radio and an array of other features. They all worked intuitively with the Remote-Touch button, which is sort of like a computer mouse for your car.
The Remote-Touch feature allowed me to easily move through logical menus of the vehicle’s features. Located centrally for your comfort and convenience, buttons on either side are accessible to both the driver and front passenger.
Moms will really like this worry-free technology that helps you stay focused on driving while maintaining complete control of the car.
The backseat is your kids’ domain, especially with the versatile dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system.
Although this is a five-passenger vehicle, I find it ideal for a family with two kids. That’s because of all of the incredible features and creature comforts.
The drop down center console houses, not only cup holders but also plenty of storage space. The forward center floor console has a variety of options. You’ll find a 20V AC plug, video input jacks, volume control and headphone jacks which are perfect to keep traveling teens well occupied.
The RX F Sport’s center console has also been refreshed. Its layout has been made more ergonomic, making it much more useable. The instrument cluster features gauge faces that are large and easy-to-read.
Under the floor mat, you’ll find the spare tire and some additional clean storage space for hiding goodies-for-later out of sight. Additionally, you will also find a first aid kit which you will never know just how useful this is until you need it. No doubt it will prove useful when road tripping with kids, no matter how old they are.
All these features come together to make the 2016 Lexus RX F Sport one of the most luxurious and comfortable vehicles available today and an ideal way to travel on any road trip adventure.
