I still have fond memories of gong to the drive-in with my parents in our Oldsmobile station wagon when I was a kid. My dad would park the car backwards and open up the hatch so my pajama-glad friends and I would have plenty of room to spread out with our pillows to watch the movie with the big box speaker in the car window.
Fast-forward and today I can share that same cinematic magic under-the-stars with my own kids and their friends at the state-of-the-art Coyote Drive-In.
Coyote has not only brought back the nostalgia of the old drive-in theaters, it has amped up the amenities and put a modern spin on the outdoor movie experience for today’s contemporary families.
This is definitely not your grandpa’s drive-in theater.
This new high-tech, dog-friendly drive-in sits on 35 sprawling acres and it can accommodate 1,500 cars. As we drove through the entrance we were taken aback to see the five larger-than-life screens glowing in the night sky.
They look like giant billboards and stand about 75-feet wide and rise 55-feet in the air and boast the highest quality digital projection and screen technology.
Their enormity makes movie viewing easy from the comfort of your car, or sprawled out on blankets on the lawn beneath the big screen for a close-up encounter al fresco.
My girls loved the fact that each screen ran a double feature with first-run movies that offered several teen and family-friendly selections to pick from.
Although your kids will enjoy the novelty of seeing two back-to-back movies with an intermission, moms and dads will love the family-priced value of this special night out. Tickets start at just $6 for children and $8 for adults. Now that’s a deal, especially for two movies!
Coyote Drive-In not only offers a great family value, but also so much more. The grounds have a canteen which is like a restaurant and bar pavilion with indoor and outdoor covered seating for 300 guests.
The girls and I also discovered all of our favorite movie-watching foods including hand-crafted pizza, burgers, wings and tenders from the full-service kitchen. We also indulged in a few traditional concessions like giant pretzels, churros, popcorn and amazing candy selections.
For the grown-up moviegoer, Coyote Drive-In comes complete with a beer and wine bar, featuring many craft beer favorites, frozen wineritas and sometimes even live bands.
Coyote also prepares Sno-Cones and Cotton Candy on site and has a merchandise shop if you want to take home a few souvenirs.
With so much to choose from, it’s best to arrive an hour or two before the sun goes down to enjoy a great dinner, listen to fantastic music and let the kids play or just hang out in the pavilion.
Since the kids are out of school during winter break, it’s an ideal time to check out Coyote Drive-In and share some intentional time together during this busy season.
Enjoying a family outing or even a date night at the drive-in is a great way to take a break away from the hustle and bustle of the holidays.
Best of all, it’s a fun way to create a new Christmas tradition that you can enjoy all year long.
