Whoever coined the phrase that “you can’t go home again” has never visited Carlton Landing, Oklahoma’s newest town on Lake Eufaula.
As a native Oklahoman, now turned Dallas transplant, I realize the Sooner State is part of my DNA.
I’m intrinsically drawn to explore new destinations that help build intentional family moments. It’s an ingrained familiarity like walking along paths of Oklahoma’s red clay dirt.
That’s why when I visited Carlton Landing for a recent weekend getaway I felt as if I had not only returned home, but that I had been teleported to a bygone era.
It’s a place that inspires guests, and residents alike, to lead life with more purpose, more enjoyment and more moments worthy of holding close to your heart.
This made it a perfect venue for our intergenerational ladies’ weekend that included my eldest teen daughter, my mother and a few her lively octogenarian girlfriends.
It was a scenic 3.5-hour drive from Dallas along I-35 North for my daughter and I to get to Carlton Landing. Whereas my mother and her girlfriends took the short 2-hour jaunt from Oklahoma City on I-40 East to meet up for this grand getaway experience.
Carlton Landing is a unique lakeside community that was founded in 2011. It sits on one of Lake Eufaula’s most scenic areas with sandy beaches, towering cliffs and beautiful woodlands.
As we meandered down through the entrance we were awestruck by the picturesque overlook that hovers above this storybook town.
Situated on just over 2,000 acres, Carlton Landing features more than 100 completed homes (the first of a long-term plan for 3,000), a farm, a community garden, and Oklahoma’s first rural charter school.
It’s modeled after seaside communities that you’re more likely to find on the Florida panhandle rather than in the middle of the eastern Oklahoma woodlands.
This vacation rental and residential development is part of a crafted master plan inspired by the New Urbanism movement. It’s a philosophy that genuinely integrates life, work, and play into the core of a community’s vitality.
As we drove along the idyllic tree-lined streets, I could almost feel my blood pressure drop as I exhaled and re-calibrated to this new rhythm of serenity.
I’m sure other first-time visitors have had similar reactions because staying at Carlton Landing is the fastest way to put the world’s busyness on pause and travel to a simpler time.
The ladies were giddy with excitement as we drove up to our rental cottage where we would spend the next few nights for our intergenerational slumber party.
Our vacation rental cottage, called Nummy’s Front Porch, featured incomparable architecture with high-end, homey décor in rustic lake house themes.
Carlton Landing offers a variety of one, two, or three bedroom rentals. Every cottage comes with a fully equipped kitchen, spacious living area, and a charming neighborhood feel.
We spent mornings and evenings outside on the porch. Sometimes we just lingered inside visiting and playing board games after eating delicious home-cooked meals that we prepared in the cottage’s well-equipped kitchen.
If cooking isn’t your thing, you can also hire local chefs who will come in and prepare meals for your family. There are also an array of other amenities to make guests feel special like yoga classes on the bluffs overlooking the property, or hosting a private lakeside dinner party just for your group.
The venue is also ideal for special events including destination wedding ceremonies or smaller gatherings like scrapbook weekends or group retreats.
My daughter and I spent some special bonding time together and had fun exploring the property by taking long bike rides around the grounds and soaking in a little sun by the pool.
We also hiked the nature trails and kayaked around the lake with free rental equipment provided by the Carlton Landing Marina and Boat Club. In between, we enjoyed snacks at the onsite food truck and other yummy goodies at the outdoor restaurant and coffee shop.
On Sunday, we joined in the open-air community church service and met some of the property owners and other guests who were visiting for the weekend.
The gathering was a wonderful display of community togetherness. It made me appreciate living in a simpler time where we are unplugged from technology and better tuned into nature and each other.
Our Carlton Landing getaway gave us a chance to be fully present without the distractions of running from one activity to another by offering convenience, comfort and closeness.
It was such a treat to spend quality time with my mother, my daughter and the other senior ladies at this unique vacation destination.
Carlton Landing’s family centeredness and inviting surroundings made it a wonderful setting to share the blessings of intergenerational travel. There’s nothing like the wisdom and wit of an amazing circle of women to make you feel right at home no matter where you are.
I believe that’s what makes Carlton Landing so special. It’s about living intentionally, discovering a new sense of community and experiencing joy in all we do.
